Ramayana Paintings
Scenography backdrops by Bodil Eide
These paintings were created as scenography backdrops for a musical called Ramayana. It was performed in Cabella Ligure in June 2022. The Ramayana is one of the most important of the ancient Indian epics, still very present in modern time. It tells the story of the exiled prince Rama as he travels through India. His wife Sita is abducted by the evil Ravana, and Rama is forced to go to war to rescue her. Rama is victorious due to his absolute justice and is crowned as the perfect king. King Rama is a symbol of Dharma, an inner truth in humans that expresses itself through ones sense of right conduct and thereby social order.
One of the aims of my work was to bring the imagery of the indian myth into the space and sensibility of the western visual tradition. Each scene needed its own sense of place, its own atmosphere and feeling. Each composition was researched both from an oriental and european point of view, sketched out and brought to a final painting, keeping the texture, layering and looseness always present. For example, the painting “Exile” is taken quite directly from a Cézànne composition. Fransisco Goya was an inspiration for the cave in “Hiding from Giants”, John Constable informed the “Through the Clouds”, etc. The looseness of the brushstrokes may hold a sense of flux and constant reconfiguration of the world, as myth is ever present in human endeavor regardless of time.

Please note that every painting was done on paper with extra margins, beyond the dimensions presented, to accommodate the necessary adjustments during the production process. I advise the use of a passe-partout for framing purposes.
The money raised will constitute an important support to my living and professional needs as an artist in the coming months.
I also take on commissions should you have any requests that seem fitting to my way of working.
Shipping and handling costs are not included in the values presented.
Take a look. If any of them spark your interest please let me know.
